The only program of its kind, PlaySmart uses video games as an educational tool to teach students a variety of practical, applicable skills. Using specifically designed curriculum to highlight and maximize the educational values that are inherent in playing games, PlaySmart features structured and goal-oriented gaming; students follow lessons and aim to reach given objectives. Among the skills PlaySmart helps students develop, some of the most important are those learned by working with and versus one another.

The social aspect that comes from playing video games is unique to gaming. Every PlaySmart class teaches students to play together, as well as to play well against each other. Healthy competition allows students to learn appropriate behaviors and good sportsmanship. STAR reinforces the positive values necessary to make each student a respectful gamer. In addition to promoting healthy behaviors, competition also helps students strive to do better. Participants in PlaySmart classes at all STAR sites compete against students at STAR sites, with their cumulative scores displayed online.
Every PlaySmart class provides students with a fulfilling educational experience. The fun and engaging games are played in a safe and educational environment.
